| The SpamAssassin
(tm) software will perform these
tests and each time a message fails a test it
is considered a hit. If the number of hits meets
YOUR PERSONAL designated "Spam Score"
then a message header is added to the message
header (the message is tagged). The original
message is otherwise unaltered and is still
in tact and sent on it's way to your mailbox.
For more information on what a message header
is go here.
By default everyone's
"Spam Score" is set to 99. This makes
sure no spam will ever be tagged unless you
change your "Spam Score". You
must go to the TriParish.net webmail
page, login, click on options

, then click on Spam Filter Configuration.

This is the command center for your spam filtering.
The first thing to do is set your "Spam
Score" at the bottom of the page. We recommend
a score of 4. We have found in our tests that
this catches 99 percent of all spam with very
few if any false positives. Please keep in mind
that this is an aggressive score and everyone's
email content is different. This score might
not suit you and you might want to try a higher
score at first and monitor the results.
Once you have changed your "Spam Score"
your spam will start being tagged. If
a mail message has been tagged it will go into
a Spam folder only viewable in your TriParish
webmail
page. After
logging in you can view your spam by clicking
on the Spam folder on the left underneath Trash.

Since most people don't want to ever even
have to deal with spam it is retained in a separate
folder. If you use a regular email client, like
Outlook Express set to the default settings,
this Spam folder will not be viewable in your
client. The default POP3 (mail language) protocol
will only see Inbox. This means you will have
to go login to webmail to look at email that
has been tagged as spam.
Even though SpamAssassin
(tm) is very good at what it does it is
just software on a computer fighting a battle
that changes daily. For
this reason by default we retain the email that
is tagged for fifteen days. The
email is then purged from our system.
In the event that you have email that has been
tagged as spam, and you have not changed the
default 15 day retention, then you can go to
the TriParish webmail
page, login, and click on the spam folder
to find the message.
If you receive a vast amount of spam you may
want to consider reducing the spam "Auto
Delete" in your spam configuration page
in webmail options (See above).

Since the tagged email is retained on the
server in your mailbox we have added 5 Mb's
to everyone's mailbox quota. For most everyone
this should be more than enough storage to keep
spam for fifteen days but some might need to
reduce the "Auto Delete" days. If
your mailbox grows to the quota mail messages
will start to bounce. Please realize
that this is an extreme case and it would take
a whole lot of email to reach 15Mbs.
What happens if something gets tagged that
is not spam? This is where the "Whitelist
From" setting comes in. On the same Options
configuration page mentioned above you can put
the address from the email in the field at the
top, make sure Type is set to "Whtelist
From", then click the "Add New address"
button. This tells SpamAssassin
(tm) that no matter what the score is do
not tag the message as spam. All future email
from this sender will not be tagged as spam.
What if spam slips through? This is where the
"Blacklist From" setting comes in.
On the same Options configuration page mentioned
above you can put the address from the email
in the field at the top, make sure Type is set
to "Blacklist From", then click the
"Add New address" button. This tells
SpamAssassin
(tm) that no matter what the score is, tag
the message as spam. All future email from this
sender will be tagged as spam.

Please make sure to click
the "Update Settings" at the bottom
of the page to implement your settings.
